I was talking to some freinds the other day and we were discussing where we were and what we were doing during disasters/terrorist attacks of the past 10 years. I realized I was abroad during every incident! I made a list;

While I was in Hong Kong about 10 years ago, a China Airlines plane overran the runway in Hong Kong and landed in the bay(They had to get underwater welders to dissect, piece by piece, the brand-new plane! No one was injured.)

9-11. I was in Rabat(Morocco). I was able to fly back to Japan via Amsterdam, but my friend who flew via New York to San Francisco was re-routed as all air traffic was ceased in the USA & Canada. She had to spend a couple extra days in Casablanca.

The Concorde crashed while I was in Mexico with my Dad. We were just about to leave the condo for a flight to Mexico City and I flipped on the news and heard this! Not very optimistic news to hear when you are about to board a plane!

Friend & I were in Seoul last year when we got word of the Madrid train terrorist bombings.

We were shocked to hear the news of the tsunami while in Hanoi(Vietnam) the day after Christmas.

Let's see...on 9/10 my husband set up a web server for His Holiness the Dali Lama in a colocation facility we use for various projects. Early on 9/11 we got a phone call from a friend, and our first thought when the phone rang was that Chinese hackers had broken into the site. Turns out it was something much MUCH worse. We spent the next two days at home glued to BBC World News.

We were also home at the time of the Madrid train bombings, and for the tsunami. The weird thing about the tsunami was that Hubby-san had been after for me for about three days to book us some tickets to visit Sri Lanka in early February of this year, and I was busy with Christmas things so I just kept putting it off. And then the tsunami hit.

I don't recall where I was around the time of the other things, but I do recall hearing about them.

I did manage to stay at home during the Great Hanshin Earthquake of '95. It was way over in Kobe, but it rocked us pretty good with a 4.3 magnitude temblor over here in Kurashiki!
