Ostia is part of the Municipality of Rome and is on the sea. It was very important for the Roman Emperor and we have some news about his story, in particular for military and commercial sectors.
Due to his commercial importance, in Ostia we can find some testimonies of different cultures who lived in this place. And some of these testimonies are important archeological sites: we can find temple devoted to Mitra (a persian god), Cibele (frigian god), Iside (egiptyan god) and so on. Recently, it was discovered also a "sinagoga".
Due to his commercial nature, Silla (one of the most important roman politicians, famous for the "bellum sociale", a civil war that happened in the ancient Rome) reinforced Ostia with large walls. But these walls weren't enought to protect Rome against the Barbarians, who destroyed all the city.
What remains is now a great archeological site and it is probably, together with Pompei, the most important testimony of what is a Roman town.
In particular, I recommend you to visit the Theatre, recently restored.
In order to visit Ostia Antica, you can take the metro (linea B) and get off at "Porta San Paolo". Then take the train to Ostia and get off at "Ostia Antica" stop. |
