I have many friends and family members who go south to the Carribean, or Central America for vacation. They usually spend thousands of dollars on a two week trip, when they could do it for much cheaper or longer! I traveled budget-style thru Central America for over 2 months. I spent a total of about $2500 US. This does not include my plane ticket, but it did include Christmas gifts for my family, and an occasional splurge on a nice hotel room, or pretty girl (I don't mean hooker, I mean dinner/drinks, etc).
Just so you know: In Costa Rica and in Panama, it's simple to find basic hotel rooms for $10 - $20 per night. And if you share a room with somebody (travel partner, person you met at bus-stop, girl you picked up in bar, etc) you can most often find rooms for $5 - $7 per person per night.
The rooms you get for these prices are usually basic. Sometimes they are clean, sometimes they're dirty. Some have windows, other don't. (I once stayed in a place in Panama City that had a window that looked into a janitors closet - what a view!). Some of the cheap places can be very noisy too. But it's all a part of the adventure. I might also note, that at least twice in Costa Rica, I found spotless, beautiful, quiet, secure accommodations for the low price of $20/night.
This trip was about 2 yrs ago now, so prices have probably gone up somewhat since then. |
