Has anyone traveled the south coast of Newfoundland, Canada?
Although I live in Newfoundland, and have crisscrossed this large island numerous times, I've never been to the south coast. It seems very intriguing to me, and I am interested in hearing any information about this area.
There is one main highway, that crosses the island of Newfoundland (TCH). In the southwest portion of the island, Route 480 branches off the TCH (Trans Canada Highway), and leads to Burgeo, and Sandbanks Provincial Park, located on the southern coast. The road ends here. You can easily get back to the cities of St. John's or Corner Brook by backtracking.
The adventurous travelers have another option. That is to travel east along the southern coast of the island. There are no roads, just ferries connecting small outport villages and towns (Ramea, Grey River, Francois, McCallum). These tiny communities can only be accessed by ferries, and offer a REAL taste of traditional, outport Newfoundland life.
If you are interested in visiting these areas, I suggest you do so soon, as the population of these communties is steadily declining, as people relocate to cities, and mainland Canada, to find work.
