Located less than 2 hrs away from Newfoundland, Canada is St. Pierre and Michelon. These small islands are accessible by ferry from Newfoundland (from a town called Fortune), and are owned and governed by France. I think you can also get there from Nova Scotia, but I'm not sure.

Population here is about 7000 people. If you are visiting Canada, and decide to check out St. Pierre and/or Michelon, be prepared for currency and language changes. The cars are also different, and the hotels tend to be pricier than in Newfoundland.

If you've been there, post here so I (and others) can read about your trip.

I hear it's beautiful up there. Can you post some ideas about activites? Hiking/fishing & what kind/camping/anything worth climbing, for instance?
I have never heard of anyone going there for a vacation, although the Japanese flock to Prince Edward Island to see the Anne of Green Gables house, them being nostlagia buffs...

I once visited that Anne of Green Gables house. Once was enough for me. PEI has nice beaches though.

Newfoundland has good skiing on the West Coast (Marble Mountain).
Also on the west coast is Gros Morne National Park. This park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a lot of hiking trails, and you can climb Gros Morne mountain with views of fjords from the top.

I'm not much for fishing, but I know that there is excellent Atlantic Salmon fishing areas here.

Oh, and you can camp just about anywhere. There are many, many campgrounds all across Newfoundland. It is very safe, and the abundance of natural beauty means that finding a nice spot to camp is ridiculously easy.

That sounds really beautiful! I bet my brother would be into that! He goes waaaay up into the Canadian wilderness (with his canoe!) for fishing excursions every now & then!
