| Just returned from my annual shopping spree in Seoul. If you are traveling through Asia and want an inexpensive place to stock up on luxury consumer goods, Seoul's your place. Myong Dong for cosmetics, accessories & great food- "pulgogi", Korean grilled beef, "dolsot bibimbap", rice and vegetables served in a scorching hot stone bowl, "kimchee", pickled spiced Chinese cabbage, and the national beverage "soju", a distilled spirit drunk cold in small cups like sake that will knock you on your butt. There are the two main markets, "Namdaemun" (south big market) and "Tondaemun" (east big market), complete with wholesale stalls selling everything imagineable. Food stands come out at night vending local delicacies. For leather goods and jewelry, head to Itaewon. You can have suits, jewelry and even leather items custom made if you have a few days to spare. Don't forget to bargain like crazy, as this is the Asian way of doing business. Also, the more you buy, the more you can bargain. (Especially at the markets where things are wholesale. They want to sell by bulk.) |
