there's a great article http://observer.guardian.co.uk/travel/story/0,6903,1489354,00.html 'experimental tourism' from the London Observer

its loosely based on situationist theory, and is about subverting peoples idea of what it means to be a tourist.

some of the ideas are great money savers - like 'return of the native'.

There are others:

'terminal destination' for lazy
'a side bet' for not imaginative
'expedition to K2' for born explorers
'the tipple test' for boozers

have a fun

The "experimental" portion of my travel fun is what one man (a travel writer, I forget the name) called a "Columbus". As I opt for unguided, rather lengthy travels, I find myself with ample time to explore, and have no set plans, aside for a few "must-see and must-do" items on my itinerary. When setting out to do some sightseeing, ending up getting totally lost but happening onto some gem of a place, whether it be a cool restaurant, boutique or ruins site, that is called a "Columbus". (Ol' Chris got lost and stumbled onto the Americas!)

Oh, Massagelondon, I just HAVE TO mention this- my little Columbus while in London a couple of years ago! My friend & I were returning from Greece enroute to Singapore VIA Heathrow- we had 6 hours stopover in Heathrow, so we decided to go into town for some pints & food at a pub. Getting into central London seemed too time-consuming and we were anxious about catching our connection, so we decided to look out the window of the train & just choose a "cool looking place" and hop off & see what we could find. We were passing all the places listed on your avatar, and once we'd passed Acton, things began to look less & less like London suburbia. We hopped off at Hammersmith. BONUS! Great pubs- hung out for 3 hours, did some shopping and made it back to Heathrow in time for the 10:00 flight!
