Recently becoming popular among budget travelers are the accomodations formerly used by day laborers(construction workers on short-tem contracts) in the Airin district in Nishinari Ward, Osaka. Travelers who visit Japan often find things unaffordably priced(rooms averaging around US$130 per night in major cities) and the small hotels in Airin, with rates for a modest single room starting at $19.50 are looking very appealing for people, especially younger travellers, who want to stay in the country for some time. The Airin district is located south of JR(Japan Railways) Shin-Imamiya station.
*One of the hotels listed I read about was called "Hotel Raizan". |

I am familiar with a lot of those hotels above- they are reputable Japanese hotel chains and they average about US$100 per night. That is far too much for people spending a few weeks in Asia and even us ex-pats don't want to shell out that kind of cash.
Locals nowadays access the Japanese webiste "Jaran" and by pre-booking, can get clean(albeit cramped) accomodation right in the middle of the city for as little as $70 a night for 2 people! My friend and I stayed in Hiroshima this summer- right in the middle of town- for $80 a night for the 2 of us. If a person is planning to see the countryside of Japan, I would hardly recommend a hotel. One should stay at a "ryokan", Japanese inn, to get a real taste of the culture. Japanese inns are cheaper than hotels and often include dinner and breakfast the next day. They are available in most urban areas as well. |
