I like using mobissimo.com because it simultaneously searches 100's of sites, thus helping you to find the cheapest tickets without having to go to a whole lot of web sites on your own.

That said, I've found that onetravel.com and cheaptickets.com seem to come up the most often as having the best prices.

One thing to be careful of: if you're trying to collect frequent flyer miles, sometimes these cheapest tickets do not actually earn miles. But sometimes the bargains are so good it's worth it.

*Sigh* I have to take what I can get because deals like that never originate from over here in Asia. The brokers over here can get us some pretty good deals, so we can opt for choosing the cheapest airline or get cheaper tickets on flights that make multi-stops. (Not good if time is money, but all the tours here use the multi-stop flights so they can offer their clients great deals.)

hi,

I also have used Travelocity.com and found prices to be cheap. Also Hotwire.com even tells you what the peak days are in orange so that you'll know what days will be more expensive.

Thanks for listing the other sites I really liked mobissimo.com, I didn't even know about it.

I've also used Travelocity and the other service I can't remember right now. I am not sure if I got the best deal, but it was a lot easier to use them than to search all the options myself.

I got a fairly decent deal on my flight from here http://www.travelsupermarket.com/travelmerge/travelsearch.aspx?package=4 for my upcoming trip to South Africa :P with VLM airlines, but Virgin has been the best airline I've ever been on.

check you local travel agents in your Sunday travel magazines - they might have deals and charters.

another option is typing your city and destination in google search and look through the google adwords results (advertisments inserted on the right panel by google advertisers)
