Mexico is a large and varied country. If you go to the far south, the Yucatan area, you can lay on the beach, scuba dive, and explore old Mayan ruins in various locations. If you're going for the beach, there are eco-camps south of Cancun that are supposed to be really nice to hang out in. If you're going to tour the old colonial cities and the ruins, then Merida is a good base of operations.

In the north, especially the north-west, are incredible deserts and mountains. The inland cities of Guadelajara and Oxaca have distinct regional flavor in terms of arts and crafts, food, festivals, and so on.

On the west coast, there's the whole Baja California area, where whales gather in the Sea of Cortez every winter to give birth to their young.

And then there's Copper Canyon, a huge canyon complex that I thought I read was deeper than the Grand Canyon and absolutely spectacular. We once talked about going hiking and camping in Copper Canyon, but we haven't gotten a chance to do it yet.

D.F. has tons to do- the Templo Mayor, Museum of Anthropology(take you 2-3 days to see all of this!), Bosque & Castillo de Chapultepec, Museum of (the mural by) Diego Rivera(and many more places to see his art!), Palaciao de Bellas Artes, El Zocalo, Cathedra Metropolitana, Coyoacan(weekend crafts market!), etc, and GREAT food!!!

Just an hour or so out of town is Teotihuacan, where you can climb the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon.

There's fun and sun on every beach, and popular places like Cancun, Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta & Acapulco have massive tourist resortsand more Reposado than you could ever drink!

I found Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo & Guanajuato(I'm a big Diego Rivera junkie and this is his birthplace!) very cool places to visit. I've also been to Cabo San Lucas twice(I love snorkeling) and have been up to La Paz & Todos Santos.

I went to Cabo San Lucas once and was underwhelemed, but that's because I'm not a beach person. It's taken me decades to realize this, though...I think Cabo was the last beach resort town I've ever been to.

My father-in-law likes to go scuba diving in La Paz.

One of these days I'm going to get to the interior of Mexico. My husband wants to go hiking in Copper Canyon some day. The whole Mexico City area also sounds completely fascinating to me. Too many interesting places in the world, and not enough time!!!

Nope, that's why you gotta MAKE the time to see places! :-)
Mexico has some of the best, most varied cuisines in the world, and great cerveza and tequila as well. A real gourmand's paradise!
