Florida is one of the few places where a 6 to 8 foot alligator can be seen taking a swim in the park, hanging out in your back yard and taking a stroll in the afternoon along the highway in the major cities......And it's considered the norm and expected in the spring time.

Are they dangerous? Do they eat your patio furniture?

This reminds me of going to "Cocodrilo Beach" in Ixtapa, quite secluded, and there WERE crocs there! It was a hot day, so I figured they didn't have much of an appetite & thus left us alone!

I used to live in Mississippi, alligators were there too. Sometimes the really big ones would eat dogs. We had a chain link fence across the back of our yard by the bayou (waterway) to keep the alligators out.

I hear they are (now) legal to shoot in Florida. What about in Mississippi? Not that I'm into killing reptilian creatures, but I would imagine some people would shoot one in self-defense/for dinner/for a new pair of shoes, etc.

Oh yeah, you have to shoot these rascals. Especially during mating season (which is now), they have no fear of humans. One little guy just this last week literally had a fight with one. He was swimming the the river behind his grandmother's home and the alligator attacked his. The only way he could get away from it was punch its lights out, literally. The kid (maybe age 10 or so) had some severe stitches in his head but thankfully he's going to be okay. They shot the alligator. 8)
