One of the mot common mistakes I think a lot of people make while traveling is trying to get too much “accomplished.” In the midst of running from sight to sight the whole realization that the journey is the destination seems to fall by the wayside. So...
Take your time!!! Get lost! Stop when you feel like it! Refuel before you hit empty! There’s ALWAYS time for sunset! Don’t plan the details! Look around! Set aside “unplanned” days! ENJOY! |

| Excellent point, Jonathan. I can remember some long road trips with my wife where she was getting frustrated with me because we were driving all day instead of stopping and enjoying. Since then I have promised that we will always spend more time "doing" and less time "driving" (to reach the next place). |

That is most definitely MY rule of thumb, Jonathan! I always allow myself to get lost and something good always comes of it! I was reading a travel mag where a guy called coming across unexpected treasures while getting lost doing a "Columbus"(as in Chris, the man, getting lost & bumping into the Americas). :D
In Japan, people have to pull teeth to get a week off. A WEEK in Europe! Nice, but didja SEE anything? No, we were busy sleeping the whole time on the bus. (One of my Japanese friends went to Losa Angeles for 5 days! That's 2 on the plane and 3 in the city. Hmmm, what gives?! It's a cultural thing.) |

When I went to Paris... people asked me why I didn't visit the museums...? I love paintings... BUT: Ionly had one week in Paris... All I wanted to see was PARIS! The city, the people... the very life of Paris!
And believe me, I took my time.... |

| I spent most of a day in the Temple of Heaven Park in Beijing recently. Aside from the temples themselves, the people watching was fantastic. I saw groups of people ballroom dancing to Chinese music on boom boxes. I listened to groups of people gathered to sing folk songs while others played flutes and stringed instruments. I watched people playing badminton, and others line dancing, and others doing tai chi. I went up to Chinese tourists taking pictures of each other in front of various things and asked them in my fairly bad Mandarin if they would like me to take their picture together. It was the nicest day I spent in Beijing. |
